When you Falabella or miniature horse If your dog suddenly becomes listless, eats little, and appears somewhat dejected, it is important to act quickly. This behavior may indicate fever, a signal that something is wrong in the body. Possible causes include influenza, abscesses, pneumonia, intestinal infections, blood poisoning or rhinopneumonia.
Your Falabella's body responds to infections by raising its temperature to fight viruses or bacteria. Fever is therefore not an illness in itself, but a sign that the immune system is working. To assess the severity, it is advisable to measure body temperature several times a day and monitor changes.
The normal body temperature of a Falabella miniature horse lies between the 37.0 and 38.0 degrees Celsius. After exercise this may be slightly higher.
At such temperatures, proteins in the body change structure and urgent medical attention required. Also a hypothermia (below 36.5 °C) is worrying: this may indicate shock, blood loss or severe colic.
The best way to take temperature is rectally with a digital thermometer, preferably after defecation for a reliable measurement. Record the values and pay particular attention drinking behavior – dehydration poses a major risk and requires immediate treatment by a veterinarian (e.g. IV).
Keep track of your Falabella fever always separate from other horses, give rest and avoid exertion.
Don't forget: measuring = knowing – Early check-ups can make the difference between a quick recovery and serious complications.
